The microbiota is the community of microorganisms—mainly bacteria—that naturally live in our body: on the skin, in the gut, mouth, respiratory tract, vagina, and other areas. These microorganisms play key roles in maintaining our health.
When the microbiota is balanced (a state known as eubiosis), it helps prevent disease, strengthens the immune system, and improves communication between the gut and the brain. Keeping it healthy is essential for good quality of life. The opposite occurs when the microbiota is out of balance—a condition known as dysbiosis.
